Juliette Sallin is a visual artist who is fascinated by the way we perceive nature through our senses. She translates this interest into sculpture and painting, which she uses as archetypal, multi-sensory images of our emotions. By focusing on textures and colours, the artist creates immersive spaces where inner calm can be achieved. This feeling is achieved when we open ourselves to our sensations and let our perceptions envelop us: this activity of the senses reveals the continuous exchange that takes place between ourselves and our environment.
Juliette's work is made of silk, but sometimes also wood, paper and brass. A large part of her process is devoted to plant dyes. The leaves, flowers, roots and bark she uses contain pigments that give the fabric a particular vibrancy, as if the essence of the plants were transposed into the sculptures. The immersive experience of the work is then enriched with subtle sensualities and plant delicacies.
Informed by her own experiences of the sentient and plant kingdom, but also by the writings of David Abram, Emanuele Coccia and Greco-Roman mythology, she perceives our inner integrity as a communion with nature and the elements. More recently, her work revolved around the use of plant imagery as a representation of a woman's bodily and psychic existence: eroticism and desire, fertility/aridity, torment and serenity. The sculptures become an embodied and sensual metaphor for the different facets of her life.
